Behind These Fences

Behind these fences I sit alone
And watch as life passes me by
I watch the people as they avoid my glances
And wonder why they refuse to meet my eye...

Behind these fences I am silent
Never giving notice to their cruel words
Hiding my tears---they will not fall
I will NOT be defeated by words...

Behind these fences I find the strength inside myself
Doing nothing they expect of me
Head held high in spite of them all
I will not allow them to dishonor me...

Behind these fences I remember my past---
Left to sit and dwell never to leave my lonely shell
Alone, I weep my tears of pain
I do not seem to be handling this too well...

Behind these fences I have drawn myself up
Pretending to know nothing of pain
I have become a whole different person
Life's temptations will never overcome me again...
